Your service provider will tell you what exactly the bandwidth is that you can rely on for your DSL high speed internet connection. It should be somewhere between 128 kbps to 3000 kbps.

Several factors contribute to the efficiency of your DSL high speed internet connection. The speed is mostly concerned with uploading and downloading of files. Some DSL high speed internet connections will have two separate bandwidths for these functions, i.e. 1.5 mbps/128 kbps which actually means that it will have a bandwidth of 1.5 mbps for downloads and 128 kbps for uploading of files. Uploading includes sending emails, files, and/or publishing on websites; while downloading consists of browsing websites, receiving emails, accepting files, and so on.

Residential users most often use their connection for downloading rather than uploading of files. For this reason, residential DSL high speed internet offers a higher bandwidth for downloading than uploading. This system is also called asymmetric DSL connection or ADSL. The business users will prefer the symmetric DSL connection because they will need to upload as much as download files while on the Internet.

A few of the other factors that contribute to the speed of your DSL connection are:

• Phone line – the quality of the phone line is a major factor in achieving the optimal speed; copper wire seems to be the most efficient in this aspect.
• Distance from hub – the DSL high speed internet is known to be distance sensitive. The further it is from the hub, the slower it will become.
• Technical support – the maintenance and service provided within the network can sometimes slow down the speed considerably or even get it disconnected.
